What do other people blog about?

1 October 2013

Being a newbie to blogging, I decided – in the wee small hours – to take a look at some other gene-blogs on ‘t’interweb’. Unsurprisingly, there are a vast number and I am sure I only scratched the surface before the witching hour. OK…. let’s be honest…. it was way past the witching hour when I switched off the computer last night having submitted my lecture proposals for the 45th Annual Southern California Genealogy Jamboree.

I follow various friends and gene-colleagues who blog and all are very different – a good thing of course because if they were all the same, t’would be very boring. Some focus on passing on genealogy news in the way of special offers, newsworthy items, new search facilities, the latest record databases additions to various websites, best practice ideas and more. Others discuss their exciting genealogy discoveries, hints and tricks, and many use blogs to keep family, friends and colleagues up to date with their work. It is interesting to see how many people express extremely strong opinions in one manner or another on various topics…. an odd place to do so – very publicly – but each to their own I guess.

Having been involved in this field for the best part of two decades, I am acutely aware that this hobby, pastime, profession or whatever you wish to call it, is like marmite – you either ‘love it or hate it’. Talk to someone who hates it, their eyes glaze over. Start up a conversation with someone who loves it and you could be there for quite a while hearing their stories. There is fine line between keeping others interested in your tales and boring them rigid, eh!?

Ultimately, it’s up to you what you blog about or indeed, which blogs you bother to read. Tomorrow, I will share with you a short story (censored, of course) about an Heir Hunting case we worked on last year to give you an idea of how fascinating our work can be….
