Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish

4 January 2014

The Womble Patrol continues….  fourteen children born in England and Wales between 1994 and 2005 called Tobermory and indeed four named Tomsk between 1996 and 2004. It would be remarkable if these names were not even in the slightest bit linked to the creations by Elisabeth Beresford.

Pointy-nosed, furry creatures who lived in burrows, the Wombles aimed to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways. Although they supposedly live in all countries across the world, Beresford’s stories were concerned with the lives of the inhabitants of the burrow on Wimbledon Common in London.

Alderney and Wellington are names found more frequently in the records, due to their link with people and places of the era. However, Bungo is still causing us a problem, as are Shansi and Obidos!

We’ve been thinking though…. which other children’s TV programme/s could take over next week from the Wombling? We look forward to your suggestions…. !
