One-Eyed Britons

13 January 2014

With our Managing Director suffering with eye trouble today, our minds have turned to those who have limited vision … and we found a surprising number of famous One-Eyed Britons. Rather than hiding our findings under the nearest very bedraggled bush, we thought we would share them with you….

Did you know that the British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was left blind in one eye as a result of childhood rugby accident?

The German-born – but from 1727 British – composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) started turning blind in 1751, becoming completely blind in one eye.

Eric Hosking (1909-1991), a photographer specialising in birds, lost his left eye in 1937 when was attacked by a tawny owl. His autobiography was titled An Eye for a Bird – must have had a sense of humour!

Peter Sutcliffe, the so-called Yorkshire Ripper, was attacked by another inmate in Broadmoor Prison and lost the sight in his right eye.

And finally, the professional snooker player, Joe Davis, was almost blind in his right eye. Despite this, he was world champion in 1927-1940 and 1946.
