A week of useless knowledge – Day 5

24 January 2014

There are many strange laws in Britain and indeed, some very strange individuals involved in politics – including Screaming Lord Sutch, who was the topic of an early blog on our site.

Did you know?….

  • That under Section 23 of the London Royal and Other Parks and Gardens Regulations of 1977, ‘touching a pelican’ was forbidden, unless written permission was first obtained.
  • It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside down.
  • It is illegal to impersonate a Chelsea Pensioner.
  • Since 1313 it has been forbidden for Members of Parliament to wear suits of armour in the House of Commons. It is also illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament.
  • Until 1976, London taxi drivers had to carry a bale of straw in their cabs, to feed their horse, but they were forbidden from carrying rabid dogs, people with the plague or corpses.

And so endeth the week of useless knowledge! We do hope you have been suitable educated in randomness this week.
