Taking time to appreciate the ‘here and now’

27 May 2014

Much of my time is spent with my head in the past, tracing family trees backwards in history, or forwards to locate beneficiaries in wills or intestate cases. But recently – since my return from Canada/USA – I have been making even more of a concerted effort to balance the ‘work-life’ equation and find time for the important people in my life. Last week, I took a week-day afternoon off and travelled to London to watch Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at The Savoy Theatre (highly recommended, by the way) as well as having lunch with an amazing friend of mine…. when was the last time I did that in a week? (OK, I confess – I worked for a large part of Sunday as a result!).

And then yesterday, having worked most of Bank Holiday Monday, I caught up with friends who I worked with about six or seven years ago…. I don’t think any of us have laughed so much in a long time. I feel very old as I write this, but these days we are all so het up with our own – always very busy – lives, that we sometimes forget to make time for friends and family members who we would dearly love to keep in touch with on a more regular basis.

So this week, make the time to email, text, Facebook, heaven forbid…. call a few people you haven’t connected with for a while. Redress the ‘work-life’ balance a bit and appreciate what you have before time makes you appreciate what you had.
