Friday … to South America we go!

6 June 2014

As the days goes by – and it’s only week 1! – the records for different continents are harder and harder to locate. ‘South American genealogy’…. put it into a search engine and the results are, to be polite, minimal. The top two sites for this area of the world are apparently genealogy.about.com – providing just two relevant links – and Genealogypro – a listing of professional genealogists and of the three listed just two appear to actually undertake South American research!

GenealogyInTime Magazine provides a list and description of the most recent genealogy records for South American countries (as well as other countries!). There are few items listed over the past three years but FamilySearch features heavily, with 2014 recording the addition of 900,000 records to the civil registration collection from Lima, Peru. This collection spans 1874 to 1996 and covers births, marriages and deaths that were recorded by civil registration offices in Lima.

It is truly amazing the records which have been created over the centuries and which are now emerging in a digital form. Images of cemetery records from the four municipal cemeteries in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil include some 151,000 images organised by cemetery and then by family name, again on FamilySearch, from 1897 to 2012.

So, although the more remote parts of the world may present challenges when it comes to tracing your family history, it just goes to show that you don’t necessarily have to pay more to research in these locations! Next week, some interesting records held at The National Archives at Kew….
