What is normal?

26 November 2014

The thing is, there is no normal. While normal may exist in other phenomena, it certainly does not apply to being human. While our DNA may say we are all 99% alike, we might as well be different species. We are all raised in different families by unique people, each with countless unique life experiences that shape who they are. Our experiences are unique from the day we are born until the day we die.

Normal is defined by various dictionaries as ‘conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected’. Who wants to do that?! There is a big part of us, as humans, that thrives on being unique, different and even special (in various senses of the word!).

When you hear people say ‘soon, things will return to normal’, maybe ask them what they mean? Personally, I have no idea what normal is even in my own life, let alone what normal is for other people around me! One day is totally different from the last one and the next one…. and that’s the way I like it. That’s what makes the world go round, surely?

So, next time you hear yourself say ‘I wish I was normal’ or ‘I wish my life was more normal’, maybe you should be grateful for who you are and thank your lucky stars that you’re not!

[Tomorrow, we might even get back to normal and have genealogy or history blog posts. Ah, to hell with that…. no-one wants to be normal!]
