When Yes Means No

20 February 2016

Personally, I am pretty good at stating my opinion (you may have noticed!), whether it needs to be declared openly or privately. I am delighted that, all those years ago, Emmeline Pankhurst and her fellow suffragettes helped women win the right to vote as I am not quite sure how I would have coped in a society where women were not supposed to have opinions!

However, there is a stark difference between having an opinion and saying yes when you actually mean no (or yes or maybe)! Have you ever been asked to do something/make a decision about an issue when you felt ill-informed to do so? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt that you had to vote a particular way due to peer pressure? If so, what did you do?

There will forever be situations like this in life. There will be times when you would dearly love not to be involved, when you would prefer to tele-port yourself to a location far from the scene you are currently a part of….! When people ask me if I can do X, Y or Z, I always consider the approach carefully. For a start, do I want to do whatever it is they are asking of me and secondly, is it worth my while? The ‘worthwhile-ometer‘ has many facets from raising the profile of FWL to monetary and/or personal benefits. People have asked me recently if our trip to RootsTech was ‘worthwhile’ and if I had achieved what I set out to…. well, bearing in mind I had no goals, aspirations or desired outcomes, I guess I don’t really know! Not everything has to be metric driven but the core goals need to be at the forefront. So, what are your goals for 2016? What do you want to achieve personally and professionally?

We (Team FWL) are now at a point where the short, medium and long-term goals and aspirations at HMS FWL are honed. Certain items have been thrown overboard already and various others will be cast adrift over time. The Captain, First and Second Mate are ready for the next sailing of the vessel and the first quarter of the year looks as though it will be a very successful one.

Yes means Yes at FWL and No means No. There is nothing in between….
