Curiouser and Curiouser

20 March 2016

Curiouser and curiouser!”, cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English)”…. from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, and so true of life at FWL Towers! Calls to the USA at past midnight (our time), ordering Irish, Canadian and Portuguese birth certificates, as well as answering the telephone saying “Hola!” earlier today, it’s been a curious weekend indeed!

A short while ago, I was accused by the Managing Director of another firm in the business of thinking FWL is bigger than it actually is. Well, I have to tell you, we have no delusions of grandeur at FWL. We are what we say we are. We do what we say we will do. We don’t promise what we can’t deliver and, even when people ask “How long will it take before the estate is finalised?”, we still do not give a time frame! This weekend, several members of the team have been hard at work on some challenging problems. In one particular estate, we have a fine tome of information from the family we are acting for, with names and dates, but the places are missing and there are no sources. So, we know the date a couple married but quite frankly, they could have married just about anywhere in the world. Please folks…. cite your sources (in full), so the next generation/s can pick up your research and move forward!

Last week was, for me, the story of two AGMs. The great news is that, between the two of them, they only just managed to hit the hour mark! One was online and one in person but both went (relatively) without event, which is always pleasing. As regular readers will know, the team at FWL do like to give back to the genealogy community by way of voluntary work. In fact, many of us will be attending Who Do You Think You Are? Live in Birmingham in April and either lecturing, helping out on stand/s and/or providing expert advice on the Ask The Experts tables…. all for free/gratis.

Do you give up your time voluntarily for any organisations/clubs/associations? What made you choose that particular group? And more importantly, what makes you continue your voluntary work!!? Interested in your thoughts…..
