From 1 January 2014, the Daily Telegraph has been made available to view and read from one hundred years ago.
Today’s edition includes coverage of the New Year’s Honours – among which the most notable name is that of Ernest Rutherford, the physicist, who received a knighthood – with the main story being the murder of singer Harry Fragson, who was shot by his father on 31 December 1913.
An Austrian Princess also laid aside her titles and dignities to become a nurse, the Mona Lisa returned to Paris following its theft in 1911 and there were obituaries for Colonel James William Murray, Mrs Mary Frances Anstruther, Reverend S. Martyn Bardsley, Mr Samuel Hayward and Mr James Clark. Devizes Castle was even noted as ‘For Sale’!
Although not mentioned in the Daily Telegraph of 1 January 1914, one hundred years ago today Lord Lugard merged Northern Nigeria, Southern Nigeria and Lagos.
Who knows what other wonderful stories will be uncovered in this new resource….. an exciting start to 2014!
