For readers of our blog who did not already know, our Managing Director – Kirsty Gray – is also the Chairman of the Guild of One-Name Studies and the Chair of the new Society for One-Place Studies. And last night, she delivered a webinar for Legacy Family Tree, entitled ‘Are You a GOON? What is a One-Name Study and Why Do One?’.
It must have been a very odd experience, talking to over 1,400 webinar registrants though actually just conversing with a laptop screen…. but she did a terrific job which is borne out by the comments from the viewers which include:
Excellent topic! Exceptional speaker! Kirsty’s presentation of this topic kept me interested from beginning to end.’
‘Absolutely terrific. As a one-namer myself it was great to hear Kirsty speak. Thank you for including her in your series.’
‘Really enjoyed this new topic to me. Very much enjoyed Kirsty’s affable and down to earth presentation style.’
‘Wow – what a pleasant surprise! I didn’t expect much from this topic, but this has turned out to be one the most interesting learning experience that I’ve encountered in a long time. A very different and interesting perspective and very professionally and pleasantly presented. Thank you!’
‘I thought she was being whimsical and cute with the GOON thing, until I looked it up on Wikipedia just as the webinar began. This was lovely.’
‘Excellent! She has a wonderful conversational style of presenting.’
For anyone who is unaware of what a one-name study is, it’s a project researching all occurrences of a surname, as opposed to a particular pedigree (ancestors of one person) or descendancy (descendants of one person or couple). Some ‘one-namers’ restrict their research geographically, perhaps to one country, but true one-namers collect all occurrences worldwide. Kirsty carries out her research on the SILLIFANT surname which she used as a case study during the webinar. If you missed it, you can still view it on the Legacy website for the next week or so. Why not take a look at the other webinars available on their programme? Kirsty is delivering another one in February about surnames but there are many other fascinating topics as well……
All the webinars are free but are booking up fast. If you do book, you will need to get there early on the date of the webinar to avoid disappointment and a ‘closed room’….
