Baptised in Broadwoodwidger in 1792, Emeline was the second of just three children (it would seem) of William and Sarah ‘Sally’ Eastcott. No marriage has yet been located for her parents, though baptisms for an older sister, Betsy (1790) and younger brother, Richard (1794) were recorded in Broadwoodwidger.
Broadwoodwidger is a village and civil parish in the Torridge district of Devon, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 548. The village is just to the north of the A30 road and is about eight miles east of Launceston in Cornwall and 13 miles west of Okehampton.
Marrying James Cory in Broadwoodwidger on 4 June 1811, the first census detailing the Cory family is in 1841, when James is aged 55, a farmer at Staddon, Bratton Clovelly:
Five of their children were still living at the family home, including Sally aged 15 who is my ggg-grandmother. Farming 130 acres and employing 1 labourer and 1 boy in 1851, James was still working at the age of 69 – not unusual in rural Devon at the time. The three remaining children living at home – John, Emlin and Jane – were all said to have been born in Bratton Clovelly, although a baptism for John has been found in Broadwoodwidger in 1811 and also for Harriet in 1822 and Sally in 1826.
A move to Marystow in later life, James and Emlin both died in 1867, within five weeks of one another and were buried at Stowford. Oddly, James’ age has been cut out of his gravestone in the churchyard!
Emlin’s will gives detailed genealogical information – thank you! – mentioning:
Daughter – Mary Ann Cory (widow)
Daughter – Harriet, the wife of George Paige
Daughter – Emlin, the wife of Henry Phillips
Daughter – Elizabeth, the wife of Henry Cory
Daughter – Sarah, the wife of John Jackman
Daughter – Jane, spinster
Son – John, executor
Interestingly, two of James and Emlin Cory’s daughters, Mary Ann and Elizabeth, married their first cousins, Richard and Henry Cory, sons of John Cory. Hmm…. isn’t genealogical research interesting!?
And so, the main question which now needs answering: Emlin Eastcott baptised of William Eastcott and Sarah/Sally nee ….?
