Those all important security questions

5 August 2015

When you call someone about a policy you hold or a bank account in your name, how many hoops do you have to jump through to get to actually talk about the reason for your call? Usually, at least three. These often include full name, date of birth, address and/or mother’s maiden name. Well, how scary would it be if you knew that, at FWL, we can find out all of that information!

This morning, at 4N Chippenham, I had just 40 seconds to give my ‘elevator pitch‘ to the 40+ local business owners in the room. So, what did I do? Took 10 minutes to find the mother’s maiden names of several attendees. The room was left stunned. I have never had so many people clamouring for a 1-2-1 meeting with me at a networking event. Who knows, I might even try that tack again!?

Seriously though…. How secure are your accounts and policies if you are actually being asked these questions? Are your passwords easy to second guess? Are all your pin numbers the same? Me personally…. I lie about my mother’s maiden name so only I will know the ‘right’ answer to the question. I can’t change my date of birth or my address or my name…. so I have to be creative. All my credit and debit cards have different pins. It’s a pain but it makes life more secure. All my email passwords and website logins are different.

So, how can you improve your security measures? I don’t mean the intruder/burglar alarm for your home/office. You could think about that too though….

If you want to know more about that mother’s maiden name of yours, or you don’t know anything about your birth mother/father, have you considered getting in touch with us at FWL? We provide an excellent service and we can uncover fascinating details of your family history. It’s a little too early to talk about the December C word but why not plan ahead….?
