Today is a very special day. Sir David Attenborough, the familiar, thoughtful voice that has led generations through the beauty of the natural world, celebrates his 100th birthday.
At Family Wise, we believe that’s a moment definitely worth pausing for, sharing a smile, and celebrating together. Because if there is one thing Sir David Attenborough has shown us, it’s that every living story matters. And that’s something we feel very relatable to, just with a focus a little closer to home.

A life full of stories
David Attenborough’s career began at the BBC in the early 1950’s, going on to build an extraordinary career spanning more than 70 years. From the jungles of the Amazon to the frozen seas of Antarctica, his voice has brought the natural world into living rooms across the world.
To celebrate his 100th birthday, he’s even released a new documentary – Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure. This will be a beautiful look back at the highlights of his remarkable journey. Alongside this, a ninety-minute special event honouring David will be broadcast on the BBC from the Royal Albert Hall in London. What a way to celebrate!
But beyond the cameras and the wildlife, there’s a very human story at the heart of it all.
A family man first
David is the middle of three brothers. His older brother was the late, great Richard Attenborough, Oscar-winning actor and director, many of us will remember fondly as John Hammond in Jurassic Park. Their younger brother, John, went on to become a motor industry executive. Three brothers, three completely different career paths, one shared family tree.
It’s a great reminder that the same roots can produce the most wonderfully diverse branches, and that’s something we see every single day in our work here at Family Wise!
Beyond the public eye, David treasured a love story entirely on his own. He and his wife, Jane, married in 1950 and were inseparable for nearly five decades, right up until her sudden passing in 1997. Together they raised two children, Robert and Susan. Jane was his greatest supporter, the kind of person who never appears in the credits, but without her, none of it would have been possible. So many family histories are full of people just like Jane: quietly remarkable, deeply loved, and absolutely worth remembering.

What does it take to reach 100?
When Sir David was asked what’s the secret to turning 100 his answer was charming but simple: luck!
And he’s not far wrong. Research suggests that a good portion of our longevity comes down to genetics. When David came into the world, life expectancy in the UK was relatively low. The fact that he is blowing out 100 candles is extraordinary, and it’s a wonderful reflection of how much has changed across a single lifetime.
This is one of the reasons we find family history research so fascinating. Your family’s story isn’t just about names and dates; it’s about understanding where you come from, what your ancestors lived through, and even might be written into your own DNA.
At Family Wise, we offer DNA analysis to help uncover those deeper connections and fill in the gaps that records alone can’t always answer. It’s like finding the missing piece of your family jigsaw puzzle!

Every family has a greatest adventure
Sir David is marking his birthday by revisiting his greatest adventure on screen. And it got us thinking, what’s yours?
Maybe it’s a great-great-grandmother who emigrated alone in the 1800s. Perhaps it’s a relative who served in the war, or a distant cousin you never knew existed. Every family has stories tucked away in old census records, marriage certificates, faded photographs, and sometimes in the memories of relatives who are still around to tell them.
At Family Wise, we’ve helped thousands of people across more than 40 countries piece together their family histories, locate missing relatives, and even discover that they’re the beneficiary of an estate they never knew about.
Ready to unravel your own story?
Sir David Attenborough has spent 100 years helping us see the world with fresh eyes. We’d love to help you see your own family history in a whole new light.
