At one particular point today, I wondered if this phonetic alphabet idea was actually a good one. Delta? Well, it’s a shape. A mathematical symbol. The first name of an Australian actress. A US airline…. it even has geographical connections as a delta is the name given to a landform at the mouth of a river.
And then I had a vision. Wasn’t there a film called Delta Force? Would you believe it – there was! Not sure where that information was stowed away….back of my mind somewhere. The American movie entitled The Delta Force was based on the real life US Army Delta Force unit. Produced in Israel, the first film starred Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin – it was Lee’s last film. Two sequels were produced – Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection and Delta Force 3: The Killing Game.
Delta Force is the popular name for the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), a U.S. Army component of Joint Special Operations Command. While 1st SFOD-D is administratively supported by United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), it falls under the operational control of the Joint Special Operations Command. Delta Force and its Navy counterpart, the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, are the United States military’s primary counter-terrorism units. It is often referred to in the US media as a Special Mission Unit.
Did you know:
- The capital letter delta (Δ, which has the convenient form of an isosceles triangle) is commonly used in two subjects which are close to my heart (science and mathematics), often to describe change, because delta is the initial letter of the Greek word for ‘difference’.
- Delta was also the name used for the 1972 Atlantic hurricane season and the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
