A week of lesser known London sources – Day 2

11 February 2014

Ever wondered what it was like to live in the first million person city in modern Western Europe?

London Lives makes available, in a fully digitised and searchable form, a wide range of primary sources about eighteenth-century London. The site includes documents from eight London archives and there are nearly a quarter of a million manuscript and printed pages, relating to crime, poverty, illness, apprenticeship, work, politics, money, how people voted, lived and died….. and much more.  The Historical Background pages give more detailed introductions to the subjects, institutions and documents included in London Lives.

And don’t discount this site if you don’t have any London ancestors! Searching for Sillifant brings four hits:

LondonLives

… all of which relate to people or events in Devon! Two fire insurance policy records and two PCC wills. Other names will bring far more hits in records which include some very interesting Old Bailey Proceedings: Accounts of Criminal Trials.

Happy Hunting!
